Camp Wingra Counselor- Summer 2024

Camp Wingra is looking for college students who love being outdoors on the water paddling or fishing and want to spend a rewarding summer working with kids. If you love kids, love to fish or boat (kayak, canoe, SUP) please apply. We are looking for an experienced individual who is dependable, works well with others, is self-motivated and understands what it takes to keep kids engaged and safe. We are looking to hire both fishing counselors, as well as outdoor waterspots counselors who have a love for the outdoors, expereince paddling, strong swimming skills, has the capability to lift and portage canoes and kayaks, and has a high level of energy and enthusiasm all day every day.  Camp Wingra is a community staple and our counselors pride themselves on being role models for our campers.

The 2024 summer season June 4th - August 16th.

This is a 5 day a week commitment in which you will join a staff of 10 counselors, and will lead one-week day camp sessions with the minimum of two other counselors. If hired, you must be available from June 4th, until Aug. 19th with one week off June 30th-July 7th.  Typical hours are Mon-Fri from 7:30am-approx 4:30pm. Counselors will have free access to Wingra, Brittingham and Marshall Boats 300+ watercraft in your off hours. Staff often comment that this is the best summer job!

Location: Camps are held at two Madison locations: Wingra Boats at 824 Knickerbocker Street (off of Monroe Street) and Marshall Boats at 2101 Allen Blvd, (off of University Ave.).

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • HAVE FUN AND BE FUN!

  • Plan out and structure the week's activities.

  • Facilitate ice breakers & team building activities.

  • Instruct campers on fishing skills from beginning to advanced fishing. (This is for the Fishing specific staff)

  • Instruct campers on boating skills and water safety.

  • Create an inclusive atmosphere & work cooperatively with other co-counselors.

  • Perform administrative tasks including calling camp parents, writing daily recaps, filling, and all other tasks as needed to create an incredible experience for the campers.

 

Qualifications:

  • Applicants need to have their boater saftey certification (an short online course) by the start of camp.

  • Applicants should have some boating experience, but additional training will be offered.

  • Have fishing experience, or an interest to learn.

  • You should be organized, enjoy being with children, responsible and previous camp experience is a plus.

This is Camp Wingra’s 16th year and we have built a reputation of having outstanding kid-centered camps. Campers return year after year and our camps fill quickly. We are looking for staff to continue this tradition of building the best outdoor program.
